Hello Families!

This upcoming week should be a great one.  We have some exciting things happening.  Below is an overview of the upcoming week.  

MATH

We will be starting our first unit of study on place value.  You can expect to have homework every night.  The homework is graded for completion, not accuracy.  What that means is that if your student puts in 100% effort to complete the homework, but does NOT get every question correct, they will still receive full credit for the homework.  I will give them time each day to check their homework and ask any questions.

SCIENCE

This will be so much fun! We are starting our unit on Earth Materials.  We will have hands-on experiments as well as data analysis.  The students will become amateur geologists!  Their challenge is to complete their Earth Materials notebook with neatness and accuracy.  At the end of the unit I will select the student with highest quality research materials to become the master geologist.  During this unit there will be homework, it is called the Home School Connection.  Look for this in their assignment notebooks.

READING

During our reading block we will be practicing a reading comprehension strategy called Inner Conversation.  In order to practice this skill, I have chosen reading materials that relate to our science unit.  In doing so, I am reinforcing not only reading strategies, but also widening their knowledge on earth materials.  Additionally, we are up and running on Spelling City with our Unit 1 words.  Our first spelling test will be Friday, August 30, 2013.  Remember to have your child read 30 minutes each night in their WEB book and complete a summary sentence of each chapter upon the completion of reading the chapter.
